Healthy Plants In The Workplace
Did you know that over a third of all modern office buildings in Canada has inadequate indoor climate, and that as a result absence due to illness is much higher in these buildings?

Companies often have an inviting bouquet of flowers on display at the reception. But tropical plants not only brighten up an area for visitors – they also make the workplace more pleasant, inviting and healthy for employees. Companies can benefit from the health effects of foliage by introducing plants displays into the workplace.

In many workplaces the ventilation is far from ideal. In addition, all sorts of materials and machines release harmful substances, such as formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, solvents, and chemicals found in toner. Even in offices with good climate control systems, over 35% of the employees are dissatisfied with the climate.

Did you know that:

Plants reduce fatigue, headache, coughing and irritation of the eyes by 30%.

Plants reduce stress among employees. Employees using personal computers feel better and are more productive with plants placed near the monitor. Plants permanently cut absence due to illness. In one study in a Norwegian hospital, absence due to illness fell from 15% to 5% when plants were introduced into the workplace. This is a 66% reduction.

Plants offer a good return on investment. The air quality in the workplace can be improved by improving the ventilation and by placing printers and copiers in separate areas. But plants also improve the quality of the air. They humidify the atmosphere as water evaporates through their leaves; they absorb heat and noise, and they remove dust and pollutants from the air. In brief, plants thus make the working environment healthier, and reduce symptoms associated with poor working conditions.

Plants do not just offer benefits inside buildings. Deciduous plants on the sun-facing side of a building keep the heat out in summer an allow heat into the building in winter. This can cut a company's heating costs by 20%.

This can only be a positive statement for any business
